Highlight of the Township of Admaston Bromley

Township of Admaston / Bromley — a quietly layered corner of Renfrew County — was originally two distinct townships, Admaston and Bromley, both surveyed and opened in 1843 amidst Ottawa Valley’s mid‑19th‑century expansion. Their names reflect ties to Staffordshire, England: Admaston after a small hamlet near Rugeley, and Bromley after the Bagot family seat

Much of the early growth centred on logging and land clearing, with British‑born surveyors mapping rugged terrain as timber driveways formed along the Bonnechere and Madawaska Rivers. In fact, at Douglas—one of the township’s chutes—timber drivers navigated logs down a 21‑foot waterfall before surveys and rail connections formalized settlement patterns

This landscape of thick woodlands, river chutes, and concession‑grid townships remains visible in aerial imagery and field surveys today, reflecting the original Dominion Land Survey platting of 640‑acre lots and road allowances done in the 1840s

Later community anchors—the Admaston Public School in the 1960s and Opeongo High School in Douglas—mark how the township evolved from frontier logging to a more connected rural community.

From a surveyor’s lens, Admaston/Bromley is a textbook case of early Ontario settlement: clear concession patterns, chutes that shaped property boundaries, and terrain that demanded practical surveying techniques. The historical lot layouts and river corridors continue to guide how land parcels are defined, subdivided, and registered in modern times.
