Highlight of the Village of Augsburg
Augsburg is a modest village in the Bonnechere Valley (formerly South Algona Township), located at approximately 45.53° N, 77.18° W. The settlement saw its roots in the late 19th century as a German-heritage community: in 1878, John Wodtke donated land for a Lutheran church and associated cemetery—now known as Zion Lutheran—which was an anchor for local residents.
From a land surveyor’s angle, Augsburg offers a clear example of how faith communities and transport corridors shaped rural parcel layouts. The clustering around church and cemetery lots reflects original concession and lot boundaries, with the settlement’s small church and graveyard positioned at Lot 36, Concession 20 of Grattan Township. That early cadastral pattern still guides field surveys and legal descriptions today.
Though unincorporated, the village remains a quiet node within Bonnechere Valley, integrated into a larger mosaic of rural survey fabric. With its compact footprint and historical cemetery, Augsburg offers an instructive study on how settler-era land grants and community planning continue to define modern Ontario parcel systems.
