Highlight of the Township of Bagot
The Township of Bagot, nestled in Renfrew County’s eastern reaches, was originally surveyed and opened in 1843 under a classic Ontario concession system—rectangular lots carved from Crown land in 640‑acre parcels and road allowances.
Settlement in Bagot Township began in earnest during the 1850s and 1860s, as pioneer homesteaders received lot grants recorded in township maps, some of which are now digitized in the McGill County Atlas project and local archives. These cadastral records—replete with landowner names and lot numbers—are still referenced when tracing property lines or researching easements today.
Geologically, Bagot Township is notable for small occurrences of magnetite in places like Lot 21, Concession VII by Norway Lake near Calabogie Station—a sign that early surveyors recorded not only lot boundaries but mineral occurrences too, which occasionally influenced land value and land-use designations.
Surveyor’s perspective: Bagot serves as a clear textbook in Ontario’s mid‑19th-century land division: unaltered concession grids, recorded in early Crown surveys; pioneer lot grants that persist in modern deeds; and geological annotations still detectable in cadastral boundary files. This provides rich context for Ontario Land Surveyors working through field surveys, easement checks, or historical title research.
