Highlight of Village of Burnstown
Burnstown is a small village located at the junction of the Madawaska River and Springtown Creek, historically within McNab Township. Its origins trace to the early 1840s when land was cleared for a millsite by John Burns, after whom the village is named. By the mid-19th century, Burnstown had developed modestly, with a general store, blacksmith, and a small number of homesteads.
The surrounding area was surveyed earlier as part of McNab’s 1825 settlement scheme under Archibald McNab, which imposed its own distinct landholding patterns. Road allowances here are often inconsistent with later provincial surveys and must be treated cautiously.
Surveyors working in Burnstown encounter a mix of early estate-style grants and Crown concessions. The proximity to the Madawaska River also introduces considerations around water boundaries, original high water marks, and riparian rights, all of which are common concerns in retracement surveys in the area.
