Highlight of the Village of Calabogie
Calabogie began as a timber depot and millsite along the Madawaska River, later evolving into a recreational and residential hub around Calabogie Lake. Survey activity in this region began in the 1850s when Crown lots were laid out in Blythfield and Bagot Townships, though settlement remained sparse until the K&P Railway arrived in the 1880s.
The community grew around the river's power-generating potential, and today remains framed by the hydroelectric infrastructure introduced by Ontario Hydro in the early 20th century. These installations reshaped the lake’s shoreline and introduced expropriation plans, easements, and shoreline realignments still reflected in survey work today.
From a land surveyor’s viewpoint, Calabogie is a composite of original Crown surveys, hydro-influenced parcel modifications, and recreational severances. Shoreline lot development, road closures, and hydro access corridors all play a role in defining today’s property boundaries. Surveyors must often integrate geodetic control with historic metes and bounds descriptions.
