Highlight of the Village of Castleford

Castleford lies along the Ottawa River within Horton Township and was one of the earliest riverfront settlements in the region. Named after Castleford, England, the community formed in the mid-1800s as a sawmill and portage stop just downstream from the Chenaux Rapids. Its river-lot configuration, tied to the shape of the shoreline, distinguishes it from the standard concession grid found inland.

River transport drove its early economy, and early surveys reflect narrow, deep lots facing the river—typical of shoreline settlement patterns. Later land use included ferry docks, grain elevators, and small-scale industry.

For surveyors, Castleford presents irregular lot shapes influenced by topography and water access. Legal descriptions often reference water boundaries, original shoreline angles, and occupation-based metes and bounds. Historical water levels and shoreline changes can complicate retracements.
