Highlight of the Town of Chalk River
Chalk River developed primarily as a railway and hydro corridor community. Located along the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline, it served as a maintenance and crew stop in the late 19th century. The establishment of the nearby Chalk River Laboratories in the 1940s added a new federal layer of land management, particularly involving atomic energy research.
The townsite evolved within Rolph Township, which had been surveyed in the traditional concession-lot pattern earlier in the century. Federal expropriation plans tied to the nuclear research facility introduced new landholdings and legal restrictions.
Land surveyors working in Chalk River must often navigate overlapping jurisdictions—original Crown surveys, federal lands, and infrastructure corridors. Fieldwork here may involve referencing both provincial registry records and federal land plan archives, particularly for parcels adjacent to the Chalk River campus.

Historic survey records are essential for an Ontario Land Surveyor to form a boundary opinion. Without proper research, a Surveyor cannot accept one piece of evidence and reject another. A full understanding of the sources of evidence, the reasoning of its origin, and sources for error; all of the why - who - when - where - how must be evaluated. With access to all of the available records of past surveys in the County, we have the privilege of gaining these valuable insights.
