Highlight of the Township of Clara

Clara Township is one of the three geographic townships amalgamated to form the municipality of Head, Clara & Maria. Surveyed in the mid-19th century, Clara followed the typical concession system, with regular lots and road allowances. However, development was limited due to poor agricultural conditions and isolation from major transportation routes.

As a result, many of the original lots were patented but never built upon, and large tracts remain under Crown ownership or conservation status. No major settlements developed, leaving the township relatively unchanged since its initial survey.

From a surveyor’s perspective, Clara offers a clean survey environment—undeveloped land, original monuments, and minimal encroachments. Survey retracements often rely on the initial Crown plans and limited field notes, making historical plan review particularly important.
