Highlight of the Town of Cobden
Cobden, located on the Bonnechere River system, developed around Muskrat Lake and the historic Astrolabe discovery site linked—somewhat controversially—to Samuel de Champlain. The area was settled in the 1850s as the Muskrat River was used for timber transport. It grew into a village with the construction of the railway and establishment of mills and agricultural services.
Cobden's surrounding lands are laid out within Westmeath Township’s concession system. The development of the village saw several registered subdivision plans filed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including municipal road realignments and shoreline adjustments.
Surveying in Cobden involves working with early village plans, multiple shoreline considerations around Muskrat Lake, and adjustments related to transportation corridors. Parcels often show layers of subdivision, lot consolidations, and severance activity—typical of evolving rural centres.
