Highlight of the Hamlet of Craigmont

Craigmont is a former mining town in the heart of Raglan Township, best known for its brief but intense boom in the early 20th century due to the discovery of corundum. The Craigmont Corundum Mine, once the largest producer in the world, drew hundreds of workers to the remote highlands of Renfrew County between 1900 and 1913. A company village grew rapidly around the mine, with bunkhouses, a school, post office, and supply depot.

By 1913, international markets had shifted, and the mine closed. The town was quickly abandoned, and today Craigmont is classified as a ghost town, though remnants of its roads and foundations remain. Despite its short life, Craigmont left a detailed paper trail. Mining claim surveys, road plans, and Crown mining patents are still relevant to title searches in the area.

For Ontario Land Surveyors, Craigmont presents classic challenges of resource-based land use. Overlapping claim boundaries, mineral rights reservations, and rail right-of-way sketches all affect modern legal descriptions. Many plans of record are specific to mining tenure, which does not always align with surface rights or post-abandonment severances. Fieldwork often involves interpreting mining-era survey notes that predate any rural subdivision.
