Highlight of the Hamlet of Dacre
Dacre is a rural hamlet straddling the line between Brougham and Grattan Townships, known historically as a junction point along the Addington Colonization Road. It began in the mid-19th century as a waystation for settlers and teamsters traveling inland from Lake Ontario toward the Ottawa Valley. A small Catholic mission church, several homesteads, and a general store formed the core of the community.
While it never gained a railway line, Dacre's position on intersecting roads led to a dense web of transportation routes, many of which have been realigned or downgraded. The historical lot fabric reflects these transportation patterns, with several original Crown lots divided early for roadside use or services.
Surveyors operating in Dacre often navigate parcels where road allowances have shifted or vanished. Severance activity from the 20th century layered modern parcel divisions over irregular concession lots, many of which were affected by local geography. Reference to original surveyor field notes and road deviation by-laws is often necessary to determine precise boundaries.
