Highlight of Eganville
Eganville, named for Irish-born lumber baron John Egan, grew into one of Renfrew County's dominant settlements by the 1870s. Situated at the fifth chute of the Bonnechere River, Eganville straddles Sebastopol and Grattan Townships and developed rapidly thanks to its position on the river, which powered gristmills, sawmills, and later hydroelectric stations. Egan's original mill and store anchored the early community, which was officially incorporated as a village in 1893.
The surrounding land was first surveyed in the 1850s, following the Crown concession system, but industrial activity introduced significant deviation. Mill reserves, water lot claims, and subdivisions for workers' housing produced a layered and irregular cadastral footprint. Churches, schools, and fraternal lodges all held parcels tied to specific local plans, making the survey fabric especially rich and fragmented.
From a surveyor’s perspective, Eganville requires fluency with both Crown surveys and 19th-century industrial subdivision plans. Shoreline parcels follow the Bonnechere River’s curves, many with legal descriptions referencing original high water marks. Title research often spans Crown patent maps, church land records, and early registered plans of subdivision. Accurate retracement requires reconciling all three against modern occupation and infrastructure
