Highlight of the Hamlet of Flower Station
Flower Station is a remote settlement in North Frontenac, bordering Renfrew County’s southern edge. It originated in the 1870s as a stop along the Kingston and Pembroke Railway (K&P), colloquially known as the “Kick and Push.” The station served as a crucial logistics point for timber extraction and later as a wilderness access route for hunting and fishing camps.
Despite its name, Flower Station never developed into a traditional village. It remained an outpost clustered around the rail siding, with bunkhouses and warehouses supporting logging operations that ranged deep into surrounding townships like Brudenell and Matawatchan. After the railway's decline in the mid-20th century, the area’s population dwindled, though seasonal camps and recreational uses have endured.
From a land surveyor’s perspective, Flower Station represents a unique overlay of rail infrastructure on otherwise undeveloped Crown land. Surveys here may involve abandoned rail corridors, patent lands with timber rights retained by the Crown, and logging road allowances that have since reverted or shifted. Navigating title often involves mining claim records, original railway plans, and Crown timber license maps. The terrain—steep, wet, and rocky—makes both historical surveying and modern retracement logistically demanding.
