Highlight of the Hamlet of Foymount
Perched atop one of Ontario’s highest settled elevations, Foymount stands out both geographically and historically. Located in the former Township of Sebastopol, it was originally settled in the 1850s and named after a local priest, Father Foy. The area’s high elevation and relative remoteness made it less suitable for agriculture but ideal for forestry and later military use.
In the 1950s, Foymount became the site of a NORAD radar station, part of the Cold War-era Pinetree Line. This brought significant infrastructure: roads, housing, and federal surveys that overlaid the traditional concession system. When the base closed in the 1970s, much of the property was sold to private interests, though remnants of the military grid still remain.
Land surveyors in Foymount must reconcile Crown surveys, military plans, and modern rural developments. The radar station’s layout diverged from surrounding lot fabric, creating parcels that defy typical concession alignment. Title research often involves Department of National Defence plans, federal transfer deeds, and specialized right-of-way agreements. Due to the elevation, surveys here also frequently engage with communication easements, viewplane restrictions, and wind exposure considerations.
