Highlight of the Township of Jones
The Township of Jones was one of the geographic townships in eastern Renfrew County, added to the county in 1877–1878 following its transfer from Nipissing District. In 2001, it was amalgamated with Sherwood, Burns, and Radcliffe to form the Township of Madawaska Valley. Located northwest of Barry’s Bay, Jones is defined by Canadian Shield terrain—mixed forests, lakes, outcrops, and rolling ground shaped by the Madawaska River watershed.
Settlement in Jones was sparse and largely driven by logging and seasonal camps, as the rocky soil and dense bush limited agricultural potential. Without a central village, development remained scattered along concession roads and lakeshores, with a mix of homesteads, wood camps, and recreational lots.
Surveying in Jones follows the Crown’s standard concession-and-lot layout, but natural features frequently forced deviations. Road allowances were often left unopened or shifted around obstacles, and monumentation is inconsistent. Boundary evidence typically relies on natural features, historic fencelines, or old logging tracks, with timber limits and cottage severances further fragmenting the original survey fabric.
