Highlight of the Hamlet of Khartum
Khartum is a lesser-known rural crossroads located near the boundary of the former Sherwood and Burns Townships. Though its origins are obscure, the place-name was likely chosen in the late 19th century during a wave of imperial British naming, perhaps reflecting public interest in General Gordon’s campaign in Sudan. There is little in the way of formal village infrastructure—Khartum’s significance lies in its local identity among farming families and its positioning along old trail routes.
Historical maps show a modest concentration of homesteads, and by the early 20th century, the area supported a schoolhouse and seasonal logging camps. The surrounding terrain is hilly, with rocky outcrops that made early farming difficult. Logging provided supplementary income for many families, and access roads tied into timber transport routes leading to the Bonnechere River.
For surveyors, Khartum offers a patchwork of concession lots intersected by poorly maintained road allowances and informal laneways. Crown patents in this area were often conditional on settlement duties, and some were forfeited or re-issued. Today’s parcel fabric may include legacy mining claims, wood lots, or unregistered severances requiring deep title research.
