Highlight of the Village of Killaloe
Killaloe is a village situated along the historic Opeongo Line in Renfrew County. Named after its Irish namesake, Killaloe was settled in the mid-19th century by Irish immigrants drawn to the promise of Crown land and employment in the timber trade. It became an important stop along the Opeongo Colonization Road and later the Canadian Atlantic Railway, which spurred further growth.
The village was incorporated in 1908 and became a service centre for the surrounding agricultural and logging communities. Churches, schools, and a modest commercial core were established early, reflecting both Irish Catholic and Germanic heritage. Today, Killaloe retains much of its historic charm, including several heritage buildings and original streetscapes.
For surveyors, Killaloe is defined by its integration of early Crown surveys with railway-era subdivisions. Original road allowances often conflict with modern usage, and title research may involve a mix of registered plans and early metes-and-bounds deeds. The presence of original mill lots and railway parcels introduces added complexity to retracement work.
