Highlight of the Township of Killaloe, Hagarty & Richards
Formed through the amalgamation of three historical townships—Killaloe, Hagarty, and Richards—this municipality occupies a vast area of central Renfrew County, encompassing lakes, wetlands, and rugged highlands. The earliest surveys in the area followed Crown concession patterns but were soon complicated by terrain and water access needs.
The Hagarty and Richards sections were dominated by logging operations through the 19th and early 20th centuries, with sawmills and bush camps dotting the landscape. Agricultural activity was limited by soil conditions, and much of the land remains forested or under recreational use.
Surveyors operating in this region must contend with varied terrain, early patent overlays, and the legacy of logging claims. Shoreline development around Golden Lake and Round Lake adds further intricacy, particularly in dealing with original Crown reserves and meander lines. The municipality’s formation also means surveyors often work across old township boundaries with inconsistent survey origins.
