Highlight of the Hamlet of Latchford Bridge
Latchford Bridge is a locality along the Madawaska River, situated between Quadeville and Palmer Rapids in the Township of Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan. It formed around a key river crossing, with the first bridges constructed to improve access for teamsters and settlers navigating the colonization roads and logging routes of the region. While never a large settlement, Latchford Bridge became a notable waypoint along the rugged Madawaska corridor.
The bridge crossing facilitated transport of timber and livestock, and a small cluster of homes, barns, and stopping houses grew up around the riverbanks. The Madawaska’s unpredictable flood cycles often required repairs and realignment of approaches—conditions that left their mark on local property layouts.
Surveying at Latchford Bridge involves working with parcels that reflect both Crown concessions and transportation overlays. Road realignments, bridge easements, and right-of-way dedications are common. Surveyors must also contend with riparian boundaries, historical encroachments, and occasionally ambiguous title descriptions influenced by changing river conditions over time.
