Highlight of the Hamlet of Lochwinnoch
Lochwinnoch is a small hamlet situated along County Road 21 in what was formerly the Township of Ross, now part of Laurentian Valley. Its name is taken from a Scottish town, reflecting the influence of early Scottish settlers who arrived in the mid-19th century during the height of the colonization wave in Renfrew County.
Historically, Lochwinnoch served as a minor service centre along a rural concession line, with a church, post office, and schoolhouse forming the core of the community. It remained agriculturally focused, with surrounding farms forming a stable population base through the early 20th century. Though it never expanded significantly, Lochwinnoch maintained its presence on regional maps due to its ecclesiastical role and modest commercial activity.
From a land surveying standpoint, Lochwinnoch represents classic concession-based development with relatively few subdivisions. The grid pattern remains well-preserved, though land use changes over time have introduced piecemeal severances, road realignments, and consolidations. Surveyors may encounter historic fieldstone fences and original allowance boundaries, along with evolving road widening requirements in recent decades.
