Highlight of the Township of Lyndoch

The former Township of Lyndoch is part of today’s Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan municipality. Surveyed in the mid-1800s during the second wave of settlement along the interior of Renfrew County, Lyndoch’s terrain is rugged and heavily forested, with exposed granite ridges, swamps, and limited arable land. These environmental factors greatly shaped the development patterns of the township.

Initial Crown surveys followed the concession and lot format, but the execution on the ground often deviated to accommodate the steep terrain and watercourses. Early settlers, largely Irish and French-Canadian, relied on subsistence farming, seasonal logging, and later on, employment in small mills and bush camps.

Surveying in Lyndoch is defined by the difficulty of terrain and the persistence of original Crown patent boundaries. Lot lines often run over impassable terrain, requiring advanced GPS work and physical reconnaissance. Original occupation lines sometimes conflict with Crown-mapped boundaries, especially where lots were informally occupied ahead of formal patents. Surveyors may also encounter issues related to unopened road allowances and river access points.
