The community of Matawatchan lies within the boundaries of the township of the same name, situated along the crossing of Matawatchan Road and the Mississippi River. It functioned as a service point for logging crews and prospectors operating in the region throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A schoolhouse, church, and general store once anchored the settlement, though its population has remained small and dispersed.

Unlike grid-townsite developments seen elsewhere in Renfrew County, Matawatchan's community grew organically along the river and trail system. Parcels were created more by use and necessity than formal plans, and much of the existing lot structure was formalized only in the 20th century.
