Highlight of the Township of McNab & Braeside
McNab/Braeside is the modern amalgamation of the historic Township of McNab and the Village of Braeside, officially formed in 1998. It stretches along the Ottawa River west of Arnprior, encompassing both farmland and former industrial sites.
Braeside itself was founded in the late 19th century as a mill town, centred around the Gillies Bros. Lumber Company. The company dominated the village economy for decades, with employee housing, a general store, and a company-managed wharf supporting log transport on the Ottawa River.
Surveying in McNab/Braeside requires engagement with a mix of rural grid parcels and industrial-era subdivision plans. Braeside includes early plans of subdivision and private surveys related to mill infrastructure. Surveyors must reconcile shoreline occupation, road allowances along the river, and areas where former industrial lands have been redeveloped for residential use.
