Highlight of the Hamlet of Mount St. Patrick
Mount St. Patrick lies in the southern part of the former Township of Brougham and was settled in the early 1850s, primarily by Irish Catholic immigrants. Named for the holy mountain in County Mayo, Ireland, the community developed around a Catholic church and school and retained strong cultural and religious cohesion through the 19th century.
The area’s rocky soil and upland geography limited large-scale farming, but subsistence agriculture and logging supported early residents. A post office operated until the mid-20th century, and the church remains a focal point of the local landscape.
Surveying in Mount St. Patrick involves tracing concession lots that often conflict with irregular terrain. Many severances stem from family land transfers or church-related parcels, with legal descriptions that sometimes predate modern standards. Surveyors may also encounter unopened road allowances and non-standard parcel shapes based on occupation rather than survey.
