Highlight of the Village of Pakenham
Pakenham lies just east of Renfrew County in Lanark County but is historically connected to Renfrew via agricultural trade and regional settlement routes. Founded in the 1820s, Pakenham developed as a mill town along the Mississippi River, best known for its five-arch stone bridge built in 1901—the only one of its kind in North America.
The town hosted flour and sawmills, several churches, and a commercial core that remains largely intact. It is an example of early Upper Canadian planning with a surveyed village layout that evolved around the river and mill infrastructure.

The Mississippi River’s meanders, combined with water-powered industry, created irregular shoreline parcels and easements.
