Highlight of the Village of Palmer Rapids

Palmer Rapids is a riverside community along the Madawaska River, located within Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan Township. It originated as a stopping place for timber transport and evolved into a local milling and service centre in the late 19th century. Named for the river’s fast-moving section nearby, Palmer Rapids also served as a seasonal hub for Indigenous travel and early traders.

The area includes riverfront properties, logging trails, and early Crown grants issued to both settlers and commercial interests. Its terrain—marked by rapids, granite outcrops, and dense forest—limited widespread farming but encouraged sawmill development and tourism.

Surveying in Palmer Rapids often entails shoreline retracements, hydrographic influences, and the legacy of multiple mill sites. Road allowances may be skewed due to terrain, and original parcel plans often require reconciliation with physical occupation and early surveyor field notes.
