Highlight of the Town of Petawawa
The Town of Petawawa grew out of the community that developed along the Petawawa River, largely to support military operations and regional trade. It experienced major growth following the establishment of CFB Petawawa, which brought families, services, and infrastructure to the region.
While early settlement patterns were sparse and focused on riverside agriculture and lumbering, the town’s layout today includes subdivision development, planned neighbourhoods, and municipal expansion tied closely to federal land planning.
Land surveyors working in Petawawa navigate a hybrid legal landscape—standard municipal planning frameworks combined with federal and military-influenced overlays. Survey plans often intersect with Department of National Defence boundaries, floodplain constraints, and evolving residential developments.

Historic survey records are essential for an Ontario Land Surveyor to form a boundary opinion. Without proper research, a Surveyor cannot accept one piece of evidence and reject another. A full understanding of the sources of evidence, the reasoning of its origin, and sources for error; all of the why - who - when - where - how must be evaluated.
