Highlight of the Township of Radcliffe
Radcliffe Township, now part of Madawaska Valley, was originally surveyed in the 1850s as part of the Opeongo Colonization Road corridor. Its terrain is rugged and forested, shaped by granite ridges and limited tillable land. Despite these challenges, Irish Catholic and Polish settlers carved homesteads and small farms along the road network.
Timber remained the dominant industry, with camps operating well into the 20th century. Small communities like Combermere and Barry’s Bay developed within its boundaries.
Surveying in Radcliffe involves interpreting early colonization surveys and subsequent overlays of mill lot claims, recreational severances, and shoreline development. Many roads deviate from allowances due to terrain, requiring careful reconciliation in field and archival work.

Historic survey records are essential for an Ontario Land Surveyor to form a boundary opinion. Without proper research, a Surveyor cannot accept one piece of evidence and reject another. A full understanding of the sources of evidence, the reasoning of its origin, and sources for error; all of the why - who - when - where - how must be evaluated. With access to all of the available records of past surveys in the County, we have the privilege of gaining these valuable insights.
