Highlight of the Township of Raglan
Raglan Township, also now part of Brudenell, Lyndoch and Raglan, was surveyed in the 1850s during the expansion of colonization roads into the interior of Renfrew County. The township’s rough terrain made it difficult to farm, but abundant timber drew settlers and industry.
Its parcel fabric is characterized by colonization-era concessions interrupted by hills, swamps, and creeks. Seasonal logging roads and bush trails influenced community development more than the surveyed road allowances.
From a surveyor’s point of view, Raglan features challenging terrain, with original survey lines often obscured by natural features. Unopened road allowances are common, and title records may involve squatters’ rights, timber licenses, and historic shanty sites. Field retracement often requires deep archival research and physical terrain adaptation.
