Highlight of the Hamlet of Rocher Fendu

Rocher Fendu, meaning “Split Rock” in French, refers to a narrow channel on the Ottawa River just downstream from Portage-du-Fort. The name has historically described both the rapids and the surrounding region. It was a key geographical feature noted in early maps and voyageurs’ journals as a navigational challenge requiring portage.

During the timber boom, Rocher Fendu became critical for log driving operations, with the river’s current funnelling vast quantities of timber downstream. The surrounding land supported seasonal camps and depots. In the 20th century, hydroelectric development altered the landscape, with dams and control structures now regulating the flow.

For surveyors, Rocher Fendu presents overlapping interests: riparian boundaries affected by water level regulation, historic timber rights, and early Crown surveys adapted to terrain. Legal boundaries here often involve submerged lands, shifting shorelines, and the legacy of waterpower leases.
