Highlight of the Township of Sebastopol

Sebastopol Township was historically situated in the eastern part of what is now Bonnechere Valley. It was settled in the 1850s during the wave of Crown land grants designed to populate Ontario’s interior. The township’s name likely stems from the Crimean War-era enthusiasm for naming places after distant battles.

Agricultural potential in Sebastopol was moderate, and many settlers turned to logging, seasonal work, or supporting roles in adjacent townships. The township was eventually amalgamated into the Township of Bonnechere Valley in 2001.

Surveyors working in Sebastopol navigate standard concession and lot patterns, though deviations are common near swamps and rock outcrops. Original surveys tend to follow typical 200-acre grid patterns, but parcel boundaries may be skewed by historical occupation. Road allowances are frequently unopened or only partially improved.
