Highlight of the Township of Sherwood

Sherwood Township was one of three merged to form the current Township of Madawaska Valley. It lies to the west of Barry’s Bay and includes varied terrain: uplands, forest, and small agricultural plots. Settlement began along the Opeongo Road corridor and expanded with the advent of logging.

The township remained sparsely populated, with many lots never patented. Forest industry and seasonal hunting defined much of its land use until recreational development arrived in the mid-20th century.

Surveyors working in Sherwood often face large tracts of unpatented land or Crown forest. Original survey lines can be hard to retrace due to natural obstacles and the absence of occupation. Where patented, lots typically follow the concession grid, but fieldwork often involves bush navigation and historic plan research.

Adam Kasprzak Surveying Ltd. maintains the ONLY archived catalog of survey records of Renfrew County. We are the caretakers of over 150 years worth of numerous Land Surveyors records (plans, fieldnotes and other records) . This includes records of Sherwood, and the many other interesting parts of this corner of Ontario.

Historic survey records are essential for an Ontario Land Surveyor to form a boundary opinion. Without proper research, a Surveyor cannot accept one piece of evidence and reject another. A full understanding of the sources of evidence, the reasoning of its origin, and sources for error; all of the why - who - when - where - how must be evaluated. With access to all of the available records of past surveys in the County, we have the privilege of gaining these valuable insights.
