Highlight of the Township of South Algona
South Algona was an original township in Renfrew County, now part of Bonnechere Valley. Situated south of the Bonnechere River, it was first settled in the mid-1800s by Irish, German, and Polish immigrants who combined subsistence farming with employment in local sawmills.
The Bonnechere River influenced development, with early homesteads forming along its banks and tributaries. The township was amalgamated in 2001 as part of a regional restructuring.
Cadastral work in South Algona involves typical concession surveys and early patents. However, proximity to the Bonnechere River introduces hydrographic complexity, especially where shore road allowances and flood-prone lands interact with private boundaries. Older fencing and occupation lines often require reconciliation.
