Highlight of the Township of Pembroke
The former Township of Pembroke surrounded the City of Pembroke and included rural landholdings, farms, and early industrial tracts along the Muskrat River. Surveyed in the early 19th century, Pembroke Township benefitted from its proximity to the river and early transportation corridors, including the Pembroke Road.
Settlements here were linked to sawmills and early river transport. While much of the township has been incorporated into Laurentian Valley, its cadastral identity remains important in land registry and survey plans.
Land surveyors working in former Pembroke Township often deal with parcel evolution influenced by the growth of the City of Pembroke. Road allowances have shifted, and farmland was progressively severed for residential use. The original Crown grid is mostly intact, but intermixes with early private plans and municipal engineering surveys.
