Highlight of the Township of Petawawa
The former Township of Petawawa is located along the Ottawa River, adjacent to the Town of Petawawa and Canadian Forces Base Petawawa. It was surveyed in the 1850s during the third wave of Crown land grants in the Ottawa Valley and was largely settled by farmers and lumbermen.
Despite early promise, much of the township’s land was eventually expropriated or reserved for military purposes, particularly during the expansion of CFB Petawawa in the 20th century. This has resulted in large swaths of federally controlled land and unique cadastral overlays.
Surveyors in this area must often reference expropriation plans, military base layouts, and special Crown patents. Standard concession and lot lines may be interrupted or overlaid by defence easements or restricted areas. Access limitations and federal jurisdiction are frequent practical considerations.
