Highlight of the Township of Wilberforce

Wilberforce Township, now amalgamated into North Algona Wilberforce, lies northeast of Eganville and stretches across a mixed-use landscape of forest, farmland, and lakes. The township was opened for settlement in the 1850s and named after British politician and abolitionist William Wilberforce. Its earliest residents were a combination of Irish and German-speaking immigrants.

The area’s land use evolved from agriculture and lumbering to recreational and cottage-based development, particularly around Mink Lake and Lake Dore. While much of the township remains rural, its access routes and lakefront development reflect a transition to seasonal use over the past 50 years.

Cadastral work in Wilberforce Township involves dealing with fragmented landholding histories. Concession lots may be severed into cottage parcels, while metes-and-bounds descriptions are common around lakes. Shore road allowances, original survey monuments, and informal development contribute to retracement complexity.
